MANUAL TRANSMISSION SELECT CABLE
Subject ROUTING AND REPLACEMENT

Models

Affected: 1986-88 2.8L FIEROS WITH 5-SPEED GETRAG TRANSAXLES
Some of the above vehicles may exhibit one or more of the following conditions related to manual transmission gear selection:

1. CONDITION : Driver is able to move the shifter lever from gate to gate, however, there is no resultant gear change.

CAUSE : Broken transmission select cable due to cable
                              kinking.

2. CONDITION : Driver reports that he starts the vehicle (after a soak period at temperatures below freezing) and is unable to move the shifter lever out of the gate he left the vehicle parked in. However, after allowing the engine to warm up, the driver reports that the shifter functions properly.

CAUSE : Select cable water intrusion past the wiper seal at
the transmission end of the cable.

3. CONDITION: Driver reports that extra effort is necessary to move shifter lever from gate to gate.

CAUSE : Kinked select cable and/or select cable con-

                              tamination past the wiper seal.

4. CONDITION: Driver reports that with the transmission in neutral, the shifter lever does not return to the 3-4 gate without driver assistance.

       CAUSE : Same as #3.
In most instances the above conditions can be addressed by installing a new transmission select cable using Service Manual Section 7B3-10 and the routing changes described below (condition #1 and #2 will always require a new cable). However, prior to replacing the cable, check the operation of the remaining shift linkage components using the following steps:

1. Disconnect the select cable from the transmission select lever and manually actuate the select lever through its full travel.

2. If the select lever hangs up, or does not return to its neutral position without assistance, repair the transmission per Service Manual Section 7B3A. If it functions properly, proceed with cable replacement.

After repair of the transmission, if required, reassemble the select cable to the select lever and check the shift system operation. If the shift system still exhibits one of the above described conditions, replace the select cable using the following routing procedure.

See Illustration #1

1. Remove engine compartment cable routing hook and discard. Reinstall the hook attaching screw using 5.0 - 7.0 N-m torque.

2. Route cable behind catalytic converter heat shield.

3. Take up excess cable length toward left side of car to assure cable clearance to exhaust pipe.

4. Pull cable heat insulator sleeve down to the transmission end of the cable.
