1996 Toyota Camry.(Brief Article)

Author/s:

Technical Notes

The biggest difference between the 1995 and 1996 models is OBDII. The older car's data link connector is still used, and the timing is checked by connecting a jumper between terminals TE1 and El. The timing belt drives the intake camshaft, the water pump and the oil pump, all with the toothed side of the belt. With the crank sprocket and two idlers, a total of six pulleys ride on either side of this belt; it should be inspected carefully. Hoses also should be checked carefully because the front catalytic converter is mounted inside the exhaust manifold. With that much heat under the hood, it's important that the heat shields are properly installed after service. With either engine, the front calipers may have one or two pistons, but the four- and six-cylinder models use different brake pad retaining hardware. Cars built in Japan (TMC) will have the Nippondenso four-channel ABS; those built in the United States (TMM) will have three-channel Bosch ABS. There haven't been many service bulletins for this car, but there were recalls for a faulty transmission interlock solenoid, a loose steering wheel nut and a redesigned brake booster vacuum hose that prevents loss of boost due to moisture freezing in the hose.

When installing the timing belt, slip it around the camshaft pulley last.
