The engine
|
The 3.0L engine (model 1MZ-FE, upper image) is one of the best
Toyota's engine. It has six cylinders, four camshafts and every
cylinder has four valves. This design gives a significant power of
194 hp and very good fuel economy on highways (approximately 31 mpg
or 7.5 liter on 100 km). This engine is very durable and troubles
free. Toyota started producing such kind of engines in late 80's and
by now high level of perfection has been achieved. Relatively few
maintenance required: oil and oil filter replacement, air filter,
spark plugs and timing belt. 2.2L 16 valve (model 5S-FE, lower
image) engine isn't so powerful (136 hp) but still performs well and
is more economical. I believe both these engines, if properly
maintained, can last more than 350,000km (220,000 miles) troubles
free. And remember, to keep the engine in good shape you should
never overheat it! |

Transmission
The Camry has four speed automatic transmission with converter lock-up
system. It shifts smoothly and rarely gives you any problems if following
few simple rules: - Normally while driving the overdrive should be
"on". - Never start driving right after starting the car in the
morning, always let it to warm up at least a couple of minutes. - Don't
accelerate too sharp, do it gradually. - Never tow heavy trailer. -
Never try to shift to the Reverse or Parking until the car comes to a
complete stop. - Check the transmission fluid level at least once in
three months, and always check your parking space for leaks. -
Whenever you service the transmission, always use original Toyota parts,
they are not so expensive, by the way. Manual transmission very rarely
fails and all you need having 5 speed transmission, is to check for leaks.
Interior
Classic Toyota's style: all is simple and
convenient, nothing superfluous. All indicators on the instrument panel
are well visible, simple and easy to read. Driver's place is very
comfortable. There is plenty of room even for tall adult (I'm 6'2" and
have no problem driving it). Tilt steering is easy to adjust. The cruise
control knob mounted on the steering wheel and is very easy to use. Four
speakers sound nice. All parts of dashboard panels fit very perfectly. The
trunk is spacious and it's volume can be increased by folding rear seats
down. Rear space is normal for three tall adults.
Safety
You may find out crash test at NHTSA site. The
driver's and the passenger side airbags come as standard equipment. The
steering column made collapsible to absorb collision energy. On some new
models side airbag available. But these are not the only things
related to the safety. Here are few more I'd highlight: All gauges on
the instrument panel are easy to read, so you don't need too much time to
check the gauges, consequently you can pay more attention to the
road. The power train and all electronic system are pretty reliable, so
the chances of unexpected stalling in a highway are very low. Toyota's
brakes usually work exceptionally and rarely give you any problem if you
use only original parts. The Camry has disk brakes at all four wheels and
they work perfectly.
Weaknesses
Front suspension may produce a little rattle noise after certain
mileage. Sometimes, there could be some noise coming from under the
dashboard or from doors. The driver seat is a little bit softer than
needed.
Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord
I wouldn't say that one is better than other. In my opinion the Camry
provides softer ride and more smooth transmission shifting. But the Accord
V6 has more powerful engine, and more preciese handling. Quality and
reliability rating is generally the same. If you hesitating, just try
both, choose one whichever you feel more comfortable in.
Overall
I think If you need something "special" like overpowered engine or some
kind of modern style dashboard, or extremely soft ride you won't find it
in the Camry. But if you need just very comfortable family car, it has all
you need and can be driven very long without major troubles.
What to look for buying a used Camry
I've seen many Camry with the odometer rolled back, so be
aware. It's certainly a good idea to check the car history, especially
provided that so many after-accdent, flooded, stolen, etc. used cars are
in the market. Here is how to do it: How to check history of your
car The Toyota's engine especially if not so old rarely may have
any problems. Here is how to check it: How to check an
engine The automatic transmission is also quite reliable, but
sometimes it can be excessively worn if this car has taken a lot of abuse
from previous driver. Be sure to check it carefully. How to check an
automatic transmission
Few tips on maintenance and repair
When you start the car in the morning, always let it to warm up for at
least a couple of minutes. I'd suggest you always to use only original
Toyota's spare parts. By the way they are not so expensive. The repair at
Toyota dealer usually tends to be more expensive than in an independent
garage, but they can do better since they have more experience on Toyota
and original parts supply. Even if you want to repair your Toyota at small
garage, make sure to use only original parts bought from Toyota dealer.
